FRANKLIN TOURNAMENT DATES MAY SHIFT IN '95

You can still smoke at the Franklin Bowling Center and they were smoking on the lanes during last weekend's Southern Regional Open.

Four bowlers, including tourney winner Sam Zurich and runner-up John May, rolled 300 games. Others were Jim Lewis and John Taragert.

Competition to determine who made the Sweet 16 finalists was determined by the number of pins over each 200 game. Then they rolled another game to see which five would be in the playoffs.

Brandon Smith of Hampton and Mike Rodriguez of Richmond were the only two amateurs to make the top 16, and Smith finished sixth, missing the final five by only 23 points.

Chuck Garner, owner of the center, was very pleased with the event although there were fewer participants than last year.

``Mark Mosayebi, last year's winner, couldn't be here this year because he is on the national tour,'' said Garner. ``Next year, I plan to have our tourney the third week in September so there is no conflict with the national tour.''

Garner also was pleased with the center's mechanical condition.

``We bowled over 1,000 games Saturday and there were only eight machine calls,'' he said. ``That's phenomenal.''

People around Franklin Bowling Center were impressed with Zurich even before he won the tournament - his career 11th. It seems the big righthander from Melbourne, Fla., spent a lot of time working with kids on Friday and giving them bowling pointers.

Regular league action was slightly curtailed, but the high game and high series for the week were:

Hospital/Medical: Jane Markert, 204 game; Linda Mitchell, 535 series; Billy Whitehead, 212 game; Thomas Blanton, 578 series.
