2 ARTS GROUPS PUTTING ON BENEFIT FRIDAY

On Friday the Virginia Beach Symphony Orchestra and Commonwealth Musical Stage are joining together to present a benefit luncheon and fashion show.

Those who attend will get to eat, preview glittering holiday fashions, support two arts organizations and . . . help the poor and needy at area homeless shelters.

``We're also asking that people bring an article of winter clothing that we will donate to area shelters,'' said Charlotte Spivak, show co-chairperson. ``That's an added bonus bringing three causes together.

``Fashion show fund-raisers aren't new, but for two arts groups to come together for their mutual benefit is,'' she said.

In fact, the performing artists in both groups already work together. In addition to presenting its regular subscription series of concerts plus the annual Messiah Sing-Along, the 13-year-old symphony under the direction of David S. Kunkel is the official orchestra for the musical theater's own series of tuneful, high-stepping productions. Jeff Meredith is artistic director of the 4-year-old Commonwealth Musical Stage. This year when both groups formed their first volunteer support leagues, it seemed only natural to make this benefit a group affair.

It will be 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Grand Affairs. The fashions are from 11 local stores. In addition to the haute couture, there will also be entertainment by members of the Virginia Beach Symphony and Commonwealth Musical Stage.

Other co-chairpersons of the event are Joan Redford and Carol Simons.

Tickets are $25 each. For more information about the luncheon, call 340-5446 or 426-2225. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
