MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL

In a matchup of the Chesapeake Middle School League's only two unbeaten teams, Deep Creek turned four Great Bridge turnovers into touchdowns and scored twice in the final 30 seconds of the first half for a 30-14 win Wednesday. The Hornets took over sole possession of first place in the CMSL.

Deep Creek (3-0) found itself in a hole before the crowd had even settled into their seats. Antwan Stukes took the opening kickoff and rambled 76 yards for a touchdown, giving Great Bridge a 6-0 lead 20 seconds into the game.

Before the Hornets had a chance to regroup, the Wildcats had the ball again, recovering a fumble on Deep Creek's first play from scrimmage. Quarterback Rickey Henderson hit Stukes for a 34-yard pass completion, giving Great Bridge first-and-goal at the Hornets' 9.

But Deep Creek's defense stiffened, and that was the turning point.

Faced with fourth-and-goal at the 4, Mike Mason intercepted Henderson's pass and returned it to the 10. Then Deep Creek launched an 11-play, 90-yard touchdown drive, with running back Myron Hodge busting into the end zone from 13 yards out for the score.

Danny Walton's 2-point conversion run gave the Hornets an 8-6 lead.

Then came the 30-second explosion. After a Wildcats fumble, Derrick Allen hooked up with Walton on a 28-yard halfback pass for a touchdown. On the final play of the half, Terrell Ricks stripped the ball from Henderson and raced 23 yards for another score, giving Deep Creek a 22-6 lead.

The teams held each other scoreless in the third quarter, then Kerry Bullock intercepted Henderson and returned it 52 yards for Deep Creek's fourth touchdown. Kenyell Jennings' conversion run gave the Hornets a 30-6 cushion.

Great Bridge (2-1) added a late touchdown on a 1-yard run by Milton Jennings.
