CORRECTING THE RECORD ON BRUINS

WESTERN BRANCH: First, a few corrections. While some of the coaches said they favored Western Branch Middle School in the preseason because of its strong recreation program, Bruins coach Linda Pippin wants to make it clear that Western Branch does not have an organized rec program. Several people have called the coach, wanting information on how to sign up their daughters. Also, according to Pippin, the Bruins' last defeat occurred Oct. 8, 1991, not Oct. 29 - which means that Western Branch's winning streak coming into the season was 34, not 26. With five wins to open the season, the streak stands at 39.

GREAT BRIDGE: Joy Gilmore was left off Great Bridge Middle School's list of returning starters for the Wildcats. Also, Jessica Hill may have set a record, or at least tied one, in a match against Crestwood by scoring 15 service points in a single game. It was Hill's first start for the Wildcats.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STANDINGS: Western Branch is first at 5-0, followed by Great Bridge at 4-1. Deep Creek, Indian River and Oscar Smith are each 2-3.

``We're doing all the right things, we're just not putting it all together at the right time,'' said Hornets coach Kim Dezern. ``A key point here or there and we'd be (near the top of the standings).''

The toughest loss for Deep Creek came against Indian River. The Hornets won the first two games and held match point in the third. Server Lakeila Whitaker appeared to hit a service winner, put the point was overruled because her foot was on the line. The Braves came back to score a 5-game win.
