The Children's Center has been named to receive $15,000 from United Way, the largest grant to a single agency in South Hampton Roads.
The money will be used to help establish a new day care center for disabled children, comparable to the one in Franklin, said United Way Chairman Robert M. Hayes.
It will provide day care and rehabilitation services to boys and girls with physical disabilities.
The center offers respite care, day care, early intervention, rural infant care, rehabilitation and mainstreaming of handicapped with non-handicapped children.
The grant was one of 16 awarded to area health and human services agencies. Most will be used primarily to fund capital projects, said Hayes, who also is manager of Virginia Power's Chuckatuck District in Suffolk.
United Way has awarded $100,000 in special one-time grants, he said, made available because of an increase in pledge collections throughout the year. by CNB
