HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS

COLEMAN'S HAUNTED HOUSE: Coleman Nursery, 4934 High St. W., has turned its country store into a Halloween Haunted House. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Halloween for a 25-cent donation. Children will receive a Halloween treat. Call 484-3426 for information.

JAYCEES HAUNTED FOREST: The Jaycees Haunted Forest, which features a tunnel, bridges, ghosts and creepy crawly creatures, will be open from 7:30 to 10 p.m. through Thursday and from 7:30 p.m. to midnight Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Halloween night. Located on Coast Guard Boulevard in Churchland, off West Norfolk Road. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for children under 12.

CRAFT CLASS: A class in Halloween crafts for adults 18 and older will be given from 6 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesday at Russell Memorial Library, 2808 Taylor Road, Chesapeake. Participants will make a pumpkin sweatshirt and two Halloween decorations for the home. Registration is required. Call 465-0949 to register and for a list of materials needed.

MASQUERADE BALL: A Teen Masquerade Ball will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday at Joseph E. Parker Recreation Center, 2430 Turnpike Road. Teens must be 13 to 17, dressed in costume and registered through the Parks and Recreation Department.

Prizes will be awarded fro ``Most Original,'' ``Best Commercial,'' ``Scariest,'' ``Funniest'' and ``Best Character'' from a movie or story.

Entertainment and refreshments will be provided. Memento photos will be available for a small fee.

Permission slips and free tickets are available at all recreation centers. Tickets will not be available at the door. Transportation is available for those teens who have pre-registered. Call 393-8481 for information.

OLDE TOWNE GHOST WALK: The 14th annual Olde Towne Ghost Walk will be held from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday. The walk begins in the cemetery of Trinity Episcopal Church at High and Court streets.

A limited number of tickets are available at Trinity Church on the evening of the Ghost Walk; strongly recommended that tickets be purchased in advance, reducing the wait in line.

DOWNTOWN EVENTS: The following events are planned to coincide with the Olde Towne Ghost Walk:

Trinity Episcopal Church, 500 Court St., will hold its Fall Fest from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Handiwork, crafts, Christmas decorations and baked goods will be sold all day.

In addition, a homemade chicken salad plate, with apple cobbler and a beverage, will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for $4.50.

Chili, barbecue, hot dogs and brownies will be sold from 5 to 8 p.m. inside the parish hall.

For those who do not wish to lose their place while waiting in line for the Ghost Walk, orders will be taken and delivered to people standing in line. In addition, a concession cart with hot dogs, cotton candy, popcorn and drinks will be set up on King Street from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

Children's Harbor, 700 London Blvd., will provide evening child care for $4 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday for children 2 1/2 to 10 years old.

Halloween songs, games, storytelling, face painting, mask making, and a miniature ghost walk are planned.

Children will participate in ``Digging for Bones,'' finding prizes and Halloween candy in the sand; a tricycle pumpkin-patch obstacle course; parachute games; tonging for apples; and picking Halloween flowers (marigolds).

``It will be a very fun event for the children. It gives the children something to do while their parents are on the Ghost Walk,'' said Mary Greene, the center's director.

A fortune teller will read cards from about 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at Prison Square, High and Dinwiddie streets.

In addition, the acoustic group Leisure Time will perform, and hot apple cider will be served over a small bonfire.

``We did not want to take anything away from the Ghost Walk,'' said Arden Pfeiffer, owner of Pfeiffer's Books and Cards. ``It's a neighborhood thing, and we are part of that neighborhood. We just wanted to add to it, add to the flavor.''

HAUNTED HOLES OF GOLF: ``Nine Haunted Holes of Night Light Golf,'' a nighttime golf tournament benefiting the Salvation Army, will be played at 7 p.m. Friday at City Park.

Each player will receive one night light ball for the competition, made up of two-man teams playing captain's choice. Each player is limited to three clubs in addition to a putter.

The tournament will be post-flighted. Established handicaps are not necessary. Refreshments, trophies, door prizes and a cookout are planned.

A VERY SPECIAL HALLOWEEN: ``A Very Special Halloween,'' a Halloween party for children with special needs, will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Edinburgh Parking Garage, located in the 300 block of County St. (behind the new Children's Museum of Virginia). All activities are designed to accommodate children with disabilities.

The event will include ghost stories, games, sponge painting, stenciling, puppet making, pumpkin decorating, mask making, miniature golf, face and hand painting, haystack hunt, tricks, treats, witch toss, sand bucket treasures, a spooky tent and a marshmallow hang.

Special guests include balloon artists, clowns, Sparky the Fire Dalmatian, Crimebusters and Sentara health nuts.

Activities are designed and presented by CANDII, Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters Elizabeth River Circle, Children's Museum of Virginia, DAC, Edmarc, Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities, Portsmouth Fire Department, Portsmouth Parks and Recreation, Portsmouth YMCA, Sentara, Tidewater Down Syndrome Association and the Virginia Association of the Blind.

HALLOWEEN AT THE LIBRARY: Spooky monsters, ghastly ghouls and wicked witches are all part of a haunted party and story-time to be held at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 31 in the children's department of the main library, 601 Court St. Refreshments will be served and prizes awarded for the best costumes. Call 393-8501 for information.

HALLOWEEN AT MALLS: Tower Mall will host mall-wide trick or treating at participating stores from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. Free bags will be distributed while they last. Halloween photos and face painting also are planned.

Chesapeake Square Mall will host trick or treating from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31, followed by a costume contest at 7 p.m. with prizes for first-, second- and third-place.

Bags to collect candy and other goodies will be available at the information booth. While supplies last, the bags will contain special child identification kits.

TRICK OR TREATING IN PORTSMOUTH: Trick or treating will begin at sundown and end at 8 p.m. Halloween for children 12 and under.
