Sarah Mathews Smith, 70, wife of Capt. Leon I. Smith III, USN (Ret.), of the 100 block of 79th St., died October 23, 1994, in her residence.
Mrs. Smith was a native of Norfolk, Va., and a longtime member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Old Town, Alexandria, Va. She was a former fashion model in New York City, and during her lifetime traveled extensively throughout Europe. She resided in London, England, where her daughter was born, and Naples, Italy. She formerly resided in Old Town, Alexandria and recently returned to the Tidewater area. She was the daughter of the late Clarence W. and Sallie Mathews of Norfolk, Va.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Capt. Leon I. Smith III, USN (Ret.); a daughter, Sarah Smith Freeman of Portsmouth; two sons, Maj. Leon I. Smith IV, USA of Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and Jasper L. Norfleet of Old Town, Alexandria, Va.; a sister, Ocie Mathews Wise of Norfolk; five granddaughters, Melinda Norfleet, Annette Norfleet, Sarah Elizabeth Freeman, Catherine Clelia Freeman, and Mary Margaret Gillon Freeman; and a grandson, Leon I. Smith V.
The graveside will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Evelyn Puckett. The family will receive friends at Holloman-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and at other times at 116 A, 79th St., Virginia Beach. In her memory, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
