EX-BANK TELLER INDICTED IN $33,000 EMBEZZLEMENT

A former teller at First Citizens Bank has been indicted on charges of embezzling nearly $33,000 in night deposits made by four local businesses.

Carol A. Elliott, 44, of Hertford was charged with ``wrongfully'' converting funds to her personal use in eight instances from late October 1992 to early January 1993.

Elliott, who was indicted Oct. 18, was expected to voluntarily surrender to authorities this week, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Gaston Williams.

Officials said they cannot discuss details until Elliott appears in court.

``I can't get into the particularities of the case, but it is a little unusual,'' Williams said. ``This has some colorful characteristics.''

The indictment charges that Elliott ``with intent to injure and defraud the bank, did knowingly and willfully embezzle, abstract, purloin and misapply moneys and funds of First Citizens Bank and Trust Co.''

Night deposits from Wal-Mart totaling more than $15,600 account for two instances listed in the indictment. Deposits from Western Steer, Radio Shack and Tuck's Barbeque also were illegally appropriated, the indictment charges.

Bank officials in Raleigh said they could not comment for ``security reasons.''

``There was enough concern that we filed a report with the U.S. Attorney,'' First Citizens spokesman Chris Bubin said.

Bubin also would not discuss Elliott's employment history with the bank. Elliott's public defender in Raleigh could not be reached for comment.
