RETURN TO FULLBACK STYLE NETS 59-YARD CATCH FOR CAVS' WAY

Virginia fullback Charles Way credits his improvement in recent weeks to some terse advice from running backs coach Ken Mack.

``Coach Mack told me that I was a fullback and to start acting like a fullback,'' Way said.

``In the first few games I wasn't playing the way I should. I was trying to do things God didn't give me the talent to do.''

Way explained that he began the season trying to be more like a tailback than a fullback, looking for holes instead of slamming over tacklers.

``I wanted to do things like Tiki Barber was doing, but I am not like Tiki,'' Way said.

``I had to do what I do best, and since I've started to rock and roll again, I feel better.''

Way had a strong 59-yard, no-frills run down the sidelines in Saturday's 34-10 win over North Carolina after taking a short pass from Mike Groh.

WINNERS AGAIN: Virginia clinched its eighth straight winning season with its victory over North Carolina.

That is the longest current streak for winning seasons in the ACC. Florida State doesn't qualify because it has been in the league only three seasons.

Only two other schools in ACC history have had so many consecutive winning seasons - Maryland (1973-80) and Clemson (1977-84).

Virginia has assured itself of a .500 or better ACC record for the eighth straight season, too.

On another league-leading streak, the Cavaliers have now scored in 123 consecutive games.

RED (HOT) ZONE: Virginia is not wasting many scoring opportunities this season.

The Cavaliers have had a first down inside opponents' 20-yard line, called the ``red zone,'' 30 times and have come away with points 26 times.

All four misses were against Clemson, when Virginia fumbled twice and had two interceptions.

The Cavaliers were 5-for-5 inside the zone against North Carolina, getting three touchdowns and a pair of field goals.

NAME GAME: While it seems the Redskins have a Frerotte in their future, the Cavaliers have a Frerotte in their past.

Al Frerotte, the uncle of Redskins rookie quarterback Gus, was a three-year letterman for the Cavaliers from 1938 to 1940.

Al wasn't a quarterback, though. He was an offensive tackle who opened holes for Bill Dudley, one of Virginia's all-time great backs.

TD WATCH: Wide receiver Tyrone Davis' two touchdown receptions against North Carolina leaves him two short of tying the school record 27 set by Herman Moore.

Overall, Davis had five catches for 124 yards against the Tar Heels, giving him career totals of 97 and 2,010.

Moore also holds the school receiving yardage record, 2,504, followed by John Ford, with 2,399, and Davis.

FRONT-RUNNERS: Since losing to Florida State in the season-opener, the Cavaliers have not trailed at any point in their current six-game winning streak.

The Cavaliers also have scored first in every game this year and have not allowed a touchdown in the first period.

North Carolina, which had scored on its first possession in five of six games, did not get a point against U.Va. until its fourth possession. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
