The Bay Rivers District football championship scenario is shaping up to be similar to last year's battle.
. Last season, three teams wound up in a tie for the title with 6-1 records after Nansemond River nipped Tabb, 7-6, Tabb defeated Smithfield, 26-14, and Smithfield beat Nansemond River, 27-14.
At this point, Nansemond River coach Jerry Varacallo and Southampton's Littleton Parker are hoping for a similar situation, but substitute York for Tabb and Southampton for Smithfield.
Unbeaten York shut out Southampton, 31-0, and Southampton trimmed Nansemond River, 19-7. Now, it's up to Nansemond River, ranked sixth in the state, to upset fourth-ranked York at Bailey Field on Friday to throw the district championship chase into a tie.
And if that doesn't work, Lakeland, which is knotted with Southampton, Nansemond River and Bruton for second place in the district, has a shot at York at Cavalier Park on Nov. 4. But that's another scenario.
Lakeland will play host to Bruton in the Cavaliers' homecoming contest Friday, and that should break that part of the logjam. In other district matchups, Southampton takes on Poquoson and Smithfield travels to Franklin.
Windsor will visit Surry County in a Tri-Rivers District contest, and the area's two private schools will battle two public schools from the Group A Eastern Shore District.
Nansemond-Suffolk Academy will celebrate its homecoming with a game against Northampton High. And it will be parents night Friday when Isle of Wight Academy plays Chincoteague in the Chargers' final game of the season.
