Mike Fabrizio, assistant sports director at WVEC-TV the last seven years, is leaving to open a business in Florida.
Fabrizio, whose last day at WVEC is Thanksgiving Day, says he's formed his own corporation, Fabrizio and Associates, which will operate out of Palm Beach, Fla.
His first venture will be to market videos to college students on how to break into broadcasting. He also hopes to do freelance work for ESPN.
``Ultimately, it's my goal to own a sports franchise,'' he said. ``I've been so impressed with what Blake Cullen has done with the Admirals. It's been a lifelong dream of mine to own a sports franchise, and there are so many opportunities for that in Florida.''
First, however, he says he'll probably break into broadcasting in Palm Beach.
``I've spoken to the stations (in Palm Beach) and two out of three are interested in hiring me,'' he said.
``There are a lot of opportunities for freelancing in Florida. So much happens in Florida that networks and individual stations want covered, but don't want to spend the money to cover.
``I'll be there. (WVEC officials) have already talked to me about covering Daytona.''
Fabrizio, a Washington, D.C., native, says he will miss Hampton Roads.
``I've had seven of the best years of my life here,'' he said. ``I have mixed emotions about leaving. A.H. Belo (WVEC's parent company) is the best company I've ever worked for.
``But I'm about as excited as I can be. I've always wanted to work for myself.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo
