Who is the best head-to-head duckpin bowler in Portsmouth?
That will be determined when the first Portsmouth Match Game Duckpin Championship is held at Victory Lanes over the next three months.
A field of 64 will compete in a double-elimination tournament beginning Sunday, Nov. 6 at 5 p.m.
Bowlers are now being accepted to compete. Thirty-two already have entered.
The tournament is open to men and women. Each game is handicapped, based upon a handicap of 80 per cent of a scratch 160. Highest averages from the past season will be used to determine handicaps.
Sponsored by the Portsmouth Duckpin Bowlers Association and sanctioned by the National Duckpin Bowling Congress, the tournament will offer $1,528 in prizes.
First prize will be $300. Sixteen prizes will be awarded with $50 for the last spot.
The champion automatically will be entered in next year's tournament with a free registration.
The registration fee is $5. Each time a bowler competes there is a $6 fee.
The tournament is divided into an upper and lower bracket and a bowler is allowed one entry in each bracket.
There will be several weeks during the tournament, which runs until February, in which many bowlers will have open dates. Matches are scheduled on Sundays at 5 p.m. but advance bowling will be permissable if agreeable between the two bowlers and the tournament director.
In the final match the winner of the winners bracket needs only to win one game from the winner of the losers bracket to take the title. The losers bracket winner must win two games to become the champion.
There will be no bowling on Nov. 27, Dec. 25 or Jan. 1.
Tentatively the championship match will be on Feb. 5.
Bowlers who have already entered include Wanda Strawderman, Don Ferguson, Leona Lee, Walter Laughon, Joan McCook, Brian Aldridge, Donnie Long, David Driskell, Virginia Driskell, Ronnie Ketchum, Wayne Haddock and Butch Warren. by CNB
