Sometime in the 1950s, Jim Lowe sang about ``The Green Door'' - questioning what was behind it.
The idea of a room of mystery has fascinated audiences for centuries. This century, Oct. 29 and 30 to be exact, the Tulls Creek Players are playing with that idea in the auditorium of the Currituck County High School.
The title tells the tale - almost.
``Beyond the Door'' is the second annual Safe Halloween offering by the group, but the mystery play is just one youngster-enticing ingredient.
After the play's mystery is solved, there will be a ``monster'' lineup - a half-dozen well-known scary folks standing in a row.
The children will walk through that line as monster after monster hands out toys, courtesy of Burger King, and candy.
The night's activities are designed to be scary, ``but not super scary, not enough to give nightmares,'' said Sandy DeHart.
She is directing ``Beyond the Door,'' her first time at the helm. She prefers spending her Tulls Creek Players hours onstage.
``Directing is a neat experience,'' DeHart said, ``but I definitely prefer acting.''
Ten actors, adults and children, participate in the goings-on ``Beyond the Door,'' which has to do with a murderer, a couple of oddball sisters and whoever, or whatever, lives behind the door.
Three of the performers are Tulls Creek veterans. The rest are newcomers selected in auditions.
How will they fare?
That is up to the audience and the Currituck County High School Drama Class, some of whose members will critique the play as part of their curriculum.
The first presentation of ``Beyond the Door'' was Thursday, a free show for area senior citizens. ILLUSTRATION: THEATER PREVIEW
