NORFOLK WANTS GUNS FOR GIFT CERTIFICATES

If you have a gun you want to get rid of, Saturday might be a good day to do it. Bring your identification, and be ready to tell how you got the gun.

The Norfolk Police Department is holding a ``Goods for Guns'' program at the Second Patrol Division at 7665 Sewells Point Road from 10a.m. to 5 p.m.

Citizens bringing in weapons will receive gift certificates - $25 for long guns and $50 for handguns, according to spokesman Larry Hill.

The gift certificates, collected by Goods for Guns Inc., a nonprofit organization, were donated by area businesses, Hill said.

``One of the unique things about this particular buy-back is that when people come in to exchange their guns they will have to provide identification,'' Hill said.

Sellers will first have their weapons checked and rendered safe by an officer, than proceed to a table where they will present their gun and an identification card to another officer, Hill said. A computer check will then be conducted.

``All individuals in possession of stolen and illegal firearms will be interviewed to determine under what circumstance they obtained the weapons,'' Hill said.

Individuals will receive certificates for no more than three guns, Hill said, and no known gun dealers will be issued certificates.

Pellet guns, BB guns and nonfunctional weapons will be accepted for destruction only, Hill said.
