SCC STAFF SAYS VIRGINIA POWER'S RATE REQUEST IS TOO HIGH

Virginia Power's request to increase its retail fuel rate by $25 million has been judged excessive by the staff of the State Corporation Commission. The staff has urged the SCC to either reject Virginia Power's proposed increase or cut the request by more than $15 million. If the utility won a rate increase of about $10 million, its average residential customer's bill would go up about 20 cents a month. That is based on 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity usage monthly. The full commission is scheduled to hold a hearing today on Virginia Power's request. The utility asked for the rate hike to go into effect Tuesday. by CNB
