SPARTAN MEN, WOMEN RUN AWAY WITH CIAA CROSS COUNTRY HONORS

For the first time in school history, the Norfolk State men's cross country team won the CIAA title. The women's team won for the second consecutive year.

The men, who were undefeated in the conference, had four runners finish third through sixth.

``I'm tickled pink,'' said men's coach Steve Riddick. ``We worked real hard and the guys treated the sport like a discipline.''

The women had three finishers in the top 10.

``It was a team effort,'' said women's coach LaVerne Sweat. ``The team ran well as a unit, and stayed together.''

ODAC FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Unbeaten Guilford took over the top spot with a 24-17 victory over previously unbeaten Emory and Henry. Guilford's freshman running back David Heggie rushed for 230 yards on 32 carries and two touchdowns, earning ODAC Player of the Week honors. Heggie averages 131 rushing yards per game, a league best. ... Randolph-Macon quarterback Andy Bush scored all four Yellow Jacket touchdowns in its 28-14 win over Davidson. He scored on runs of 18, 57, 1 and 3 yards. ... Washington and Lee senior wide receiver William Propst caught nine passes for 136 yards and touchdowns in the Generals' 28-17 win over Sewanee. Propst leads the conference with 37 receptions. ... Bridgewater sophomore linebacker Jeremy Guinn recorded 25 tackles against Frostburg State, the South region's second-ranked team. ... In seven games, Emory and Henry has only given up 70 points. It has scored a league-best 224 points.

CIAA VOLLEYBALL: Norfolk State's Holly Gray and Kim Mumford were selected to the All-CIAA volleyball team. Gray, a junior co-captain, leads the Spartanettes in assists (342), and blocks (58). Mumford, a junior leads the Spartanettes in kills (232) and hitting percentage (.293). She also has 49 service aces. ... The Spartanettes have won six consecutive matches and 10 of their last 12. ... Suzette Feemster of North Carolina Central earned Player of the Week honors with 35 kills, 13 errors, 70 total attacks, seven service aces and six blocks in nine games. Norfolk State's Wilhelmenia Wright Harrison was named Coach of the Week as the Saprtanettes went 4-0 during the period. The Spartanettes outscored their opponents, 181-65. ... The conference tournament begins Monday at Bowie State.

OLD DOMINION UPDATE: Monarch freshman goalkeeper Michael Rodriquez has recorded two shutouts, over Richmond and VCU, in four starts. He has allowed only six goals in eight appearances in replacing the injured Nathan Olansen. He has a goals allowed average of 1.12. ... Sailor Evangeline Callahan placed fifth nationally in the Women's Singlehanded collegiate National Championships. In the Mid Atlantic Sloop Eliminations, the Monarch Sloop squad placed fifth. Sailing World has ranked Old Dominion fifth in the coed division and sixth in the women's division. ... Senior women's tennis player Delphine Priest advanced to the finals of No. 1 singles, before losing in the Hassell and Folkes Old Dominion Women's Tennis Invitational. The doubles team of Holly Rivers and Daniele Albuquerque advanced to the finals of No. 3 doubles, but the finals were canceled due to inclement weather. ... The Lady Monarchs' cross country team will be in Williamsburg this weekend for the Colonial Athletic Association championships. Last year they finished seventh.

TRIBE SOCCER REPORT: Locals Steve Jolley (Kempsville) and Billy Owens (Kempsville) are second and third in scoring. Jolley has nine goals and 12 assists, Owens has three goals and 13 assists. Wade Barrett (First Colonial) is third on the team in goals scored with seven. ... Waughn Hughes leads the Tribe in scoring with 17 goals. ... Junior Tribe women's forward Natalie Neaton has been nominated for the Missouri Athletic Club Sports Foundation's Collegiate Soccer Player of the Year. She leads the team with 20 goals and 45 points, which tie the single-season records at William and Mary. Whitney Cali (Green Run) is second on the team in scoring with 10 goals. Keeper Lizzie Born has only allowed two goals on 62 shots. ... Both teams are undefeated in the CAA. The men finished at (6-0-1) and the women are 5-0 and have a match with James Madison on Saturday.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN SOCCER: For the third time in head coach Sonny Travis' tenure, the Marlins finished undefeated in the regular season with a record of 16-0-1. Their only blemish was a 1-1 tie with Mary Washington. ... In its 6-0 win over Lynchburg in the ODAC quarterfinals, the Marlins set a school season-scoring record with 88 goals. The old record was 82 goals set in 1991. in goals with 20. Former Marlin Jon Sturmfels holds the single-season record for goals scored with 21. ... Lady Marlin Marcia Blackbourn finished the regular season with 15 goals and nine assists. ... Keeper Sonya Huss (Princess Anne) only allowed 14 goals on 137 saves. The Lady Marlins were 8-0 at home.

ALUMNI UPDATE: Todd Stiles (Kempsville), a freshman at Ferrum, was the Dixie Conference men's soccer rookie of the week. Stiles scored two goals, including the game-winner over Shenandoah... Longwood freshman Karla Roberson (Great Bridge), who led the Longwood women's golf team to the ECAC Championship, along with teammate Frida Svensson, was named co-Longwood Player of the Week. Roberson shot a career-best 76-77-153 and finished tied for fourth with Svenson. Roberson had a season stroke average of 80.4. ... Christopher Newport sophomore James Ratcliff (Western Branch) won his fifth consecutive meet this year in capturing the Dixie Conference crown.
