Colin Gregor is coming to the Hampton Roads Admirals after all.
Gregor, a left winger obtained in a trade from the Richmond Renegades two months ago, had been playing for the Canadian Olympic team. However, he was cut Wednesday when the Olympic team obtained Glenn Anderson, a 13-year NHL veteran.
Gregor called Admirals president Blake Cullen on Thursday and told him he'll report to Norfolk this weekend.
That means the Admirals will add two players to their roster in the next few days. Kelly Sorensen, an Admirals returnee, is eligible to come off the injured reserve list and could play as early as tonight, when the Admirals host Richmond at Scope.
To add Gregor and Sorensen, two players on the Admirals' 17-man roster will have to be waived. Admirals' coach John Brophy indicated he has names in mind.
``We've got some players who aren't playing as hard as they should right now,'' Brophy said. ``We'll straighten that out in the next four or five days.
``We're four games into the schedule. Some players have played hard sometimes, and some haven't sometimes. We've gotten around the league now and have seen what we've got and have seen what some of the other teams have got.
``Any person who's running a hockey team or any other professional team has got to try to keep the very best players on the ice he can. We've got to try to make the team better.''
Brophy indicated he'll make a decision on when to add Sorensen and Gregor to the roster by Sunday.
Gregor came to Hampton Roads in a trade in which the Admirals gave up defensemen Shawn Snesar and Daniel Chaput in exchange for Gregor and defenseman Rob MacInnis.
Snesar is playing for Richmond and Chaput is hurt and on the injured reserve list. MacInnis did not report to Hampton Roads, and until Gregor called to say he was coming, it appeared the trade would be a washout for the Admirals.
Gregor had 31 points last season for Richmond. Sorensen, one of the Admirals' most physical and experienced players, had 45 points last season.
REFUSENIK: The Admirals claimed forward Cory Patterson from Wheeling on waivers Thursday after he was cut by the Thunderbirds. Patterson then stunned Cullen by refusing to report.
Cullen says he suspended Patterson Thursday and that Patterson will remain suspended until he reports. That means Patterson is ineligible to play for any other ECHL team.
QUICK STICKS: Trevor Halverson leads the Admirals in scoring with eight points - two goals and six assists. Matt Mallgrave and Jim Brown each have six points and Rod Taylor five. . . . Brown's parents, who have never seen their son play for Hampton Roads, will attend tonight's game. . . . The Admirals have one of their busiest weeks of the season next week, playing five games in six days, including three road games. ILLUSTRATION: GAMEWATCH
