No one wanted to call it the Maury Invitational, but that's pretty much what developed during the Eastern District cross country championships on a windy Thursday at Mount Trashmore.
The combination of a down year by the rest of the league's teams and a powerful collection of Commodores resulted in a virtual Maury sweep in both the boys' and girls' divisions.
The Maury boys placed five runners in the top six and rolled to their second district title in a row.
Maury's girls were even more impressive, snatching the first seven places in an easy victory over Norview, the only other school with a complete team.
Maury's Jane Lawrence captured her third consecutive district crown and won for the 21st consecutive time against district opposition.
``It's a great way to conclude my senior year,'' Lawrence said. ``I'm not real happy with my time (20:57), but the weather conditions had a little something to do with it.''
So did the fact that Lawrence ran unchallenged virtually from the opening gun. Second-place Aisha Joyner finished more than a full minute behind Lawrence..
Dallas Williams led the way in the boys' division, pulling away from his teammates to place first in 17:31. Francis Wood outkicked his brother, Darryl, down the stretch to take second. Leon Henry (fifth) and Jake Hughes (sixth) rounded out Maury's top five. by CNB
