TURNAGE, ADAMS CRUISE TO SOUTHEASTERN TITLES

Western Branch's Meredith Turnage and Great Bridge's Eric Adams had lit- tle competition in winning the individual events, and the host Wildcats cruised to both the girls and boys team titles at the Southeastern District cross country championships at Great Bridge.

The top four teams in both the girls and boys events, as well as all other top-15 runners, advance to the Eastern Region meet Nov. 3 at Newport News Park.

Turnage went out in front at the start and never looked back, finishing 31 seconds ahead of her nearest challenger with a time of 18:56.

``I could have run faster, but I didn't want to kill myself,'' said Turnage. ``I was saving a little bit for the regions.''

The real race was for second. Great Bridge freshman Tracy O'Neal passed teammate Dawn Trueblood and Western Branch's Heather Allen at the 2-mile mark and hung on for a second-place finish with a time of 19:27.

Great Bridge placed seven runners in the top 11 to score a 23-34 win over Western Branch in the team competition.

In the boys' individual race, Adams and teammate Mike Donnelly stayed neck-and-neck for the first mile. But Adams pulled away from Donnelly in the woods and ran alone the rest of the 3-mile loop, finishing with a course-record time of 15:18.

The Wildcats placed each of their seven runners in the top 15, beating runner-up Churchland by 30 points, 22-52, in the team competition.
