NANCY REAGAN JOINS CHORUS: NORTH'S A LIAR

Now former first lady Nancy Reagan has lashed out at Oliver North, the Reagan administration national security aide who is seeking to unseat Sen. Charles Robb, D-Va.

``I'll be happy to tell you about Ollie North,'' she said Thursday during an appearance in New York. ``I know Ollie North has a great deal of trouble separating fact from fantasy. And he lied to my husband and lied about my husband, kept things from him that he should not have kept from him, and that's about what I think about Ollie North.''

North has said he was following orders by helping to supply arms to anti-communist rebels in Nicaragua despite a congressional ban.

In other Senate campaign news:

The National Council of Senior Citizens endorsed Robb after North suggested that workers could decide on their own retirement planning if not required to pay into Social Security. He later insisted he did not favor making Social Security voluntary if that would threaten payments to current or future retirees.

Campaigning in Manassas, North promised to fight statehood for the District of Columbia and any effort by the Washington city government to levy a commuter tax on the Virginians who pour into the capital each day. MEMO: Related stories, Pages A8.
