Detectives are investigating the slaying of a Chesapeake man who was shot early today in a gas-station parking lot near the corner of Newtown and Baker roads.
Police were called to an Exxon station shortly after 3 a.m. A witness said a gunshot was fired, and the victim fell to the ground.
The victim, Tracy L. Snead of the 300 block of Fairfax Trail in Chesapeake, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he died.
The shooting apparently happened in the self-service area of the gas station. A puddle of blood was left just 15 feet from the station's front door.
Police said they do not have a motive, but are investigating whether the violence happened after a confrontation between patrons of Mr. Magic's nightclub, which is next to the crime scene. The victim's car was found parked behind the club near a back door, police said.
The homicide is the city's 31st of the year. It is the first since the city surpassed its murder record more than two months ago on Aug. 24.
Police spokesman Lou Thurston said officers are looking for a possible suspect described as a 6-foot-1 black man who weighs about 165 pounds. The suspect was last seen wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and a black leather jacket, and was armed with a handgun.
