Austin W. Herrick, 67, of Norfolk a retired Navy Commander, died October 27, 1994.
Beloved husband, father and grandfather (Papa), Mr. Herrick was born in Flint, Michigan, on January 22, 1927. He is survived by his wife, Maxine; two sons, Gary Herrick of Pennsylvania, and Thomas Herrick of Virginia Beach, Va.; five daughters, Christine Davis and her husband John of Sacramento, California, Carol Meyers and her husband Kevin of Portsmouth, Va.; Catherine Rudolph and her husband Joe of Chesapeake, Va., Tricia Bryant of California, Maryland, and Sara Smith and her husband Rick of Burke, Va.; grandchildren, Laura and Anna Rudolph; Emily, Julie and Matthew Meyers; Timothy, Alexander and Andrew Smith; and Jane Bryant. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Evelyn Tony, John Herrick, Kathleen Barnes, Margaret Taplin, Jean Haddorf, Mary Allison, Richard Herrick and Elaine Little. Mr. Herrick was preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Marie Herrick and by four brothers, Franklin, Robert, Edward, and Donald.
Mr. Herrick was a master gardener at Norfolk Botanical Gardens, a coordinator of the Wedgewood Block Security, a docent at the Norfolk Zoological Park and he was an Assistant Scout Master in the Boy Scouts. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and the Naval Amphibious Base Chapel, Little Creek.
The family will receive friends at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel on Saturday evening, October 29, 1994, between 6:00 and 8:00 pm and at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Sunday afternoon, October 30, 1994 between 2:00-3:30 pm. A Joyful Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted on Sunday, October 30, 1994 at 4:00 pm at St. Pius X Catholic Church concelebrated by Fathers William J. Dale and Joseph H. Metzger III. Burial will be at sea.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church or Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
