CORRECTION/CLARIFICATION: ***************************************************************** A map Saturday showing the location of a shooting early Friday in Virginia Beach had an error. The map correctly located the site, near the intersection of Newtown and Baker roads. However, an inset in the map mislocated the general area. Correction published Tuesday, November 1, 1994. ***************************************************************** CHESAPEAKE MAN FATALLY SHOT OUTSIDE BEACH GAS STATION

A 23-year-old Chesapeake man was fatally shot early Friday in the parking lot of a gas station near the intersection of Newtown and Baker roads.

It was the city's 31st homicide this year, and the first since it surpassed its annual murder record Aug. 24.

Police and rescue workers arrived at the Exxon station shortly after 3 a.m. and found Tracy L. Snead on the concrete a few feet from the front door. Snead, of the 3000 block of Fairfax Trail in Chesapeake, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he died.

Witnesses told police they heard a gunshot and saw Snead fall.

Police spokesman Lou Thurston said authorities did not have a suspect in custody but were looking for a 6-foot-1, 165-pound black man. The suspect was wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and a black leather jacket, and had a handgun.

Police said they were not aware of a motive, but were investigating whether the shooting followed a confrontation among patrons of Mr. Magic's nightclub, next to the crime scene.

A car identified as the victim's was found parked behind the club, police said.

Officers were also searching for as many as three cars that were apparently seen in the area at the time of the shooting.
