VIRGINIA POWER'S RATES GOING UP SLIGHTLY

The average Virginia Power residential customer will pay an extra 20 cents a month beginning Tuesday under a $9.9 million fuel-factor rate hike approved Friday by the State Corporation Commission. The utility had asked for a rate increase of $25 million to cover increased cost of fuels. That would have worked out to an increase of 50 cents a month for an average residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity monthly. But the commission, deciding that Virginia Power's request was excessive, cut the request to the smaller amount. (Staff) by CNB
