SCOTT HASTY: VOLUNTEER MONSTER, SOUND SYSTEM SALES REPRESENTATIVE

If a devilish monster needs a 6-foot, 6-inch frame, Scott Hasty qualifies.

But his warm smile shows he's not as sinister as he tries to look.

During the Halloween season, Hasty transforms himself into a monster for the annual Ghost Train attraction at Northwest River Park.

It takes him 50 minutes to put on makeup and costumes to prepare for the part.

During one recent makeup session, he sprayed his shiny, brown hair, turning it stiff and dull.

``Gosh this stuff stinks,'' he said.

Peering into a mirror, he brushed spirit gum across his nose. After letting it dry a few minutes, he applied a pinkish blob of putty and fashioned it into a nose.

``The roar of the greasepaint and the smell of the crowd!'' he exclaimed.

He dabbed more spirit gum on his cheeks and attached a bloody horn to each side.

``I'm not a conformist,'' he said. ``I want horns on my cheeks, not on my forehead.''

With a small sponge, he applied makeup to his face, trailing it over his cheeks, lips, eyelids and ears and across his fake nose to the edge of his nostrils.

``That tickles,'' he said.

He brushed layers of black eyeliner around his mouth and lips, and created thick, shadowy eyebrows. After blending in a few streaks of gray around his hairline, Hasty stood, ground his white teeth and snarled, ``Whaaah!''

A child standing nearby jumped.

``What most people have nightmares about, I like to create,'' he said.
