10-YEAR-OLD GIRL KILLED IN SMITHFIELD COLLISION

Police on Saturday identified the victim of a fatal head-on crash that occurred Friday as Crystal L. Combs, 10, of Elveron.

Combs died when the 1984 Honda she was in was struck by a 1981 Ford pickup that crossed the center line of the highway in front of Smithfield High School.

Four teenagers also were injured in the accident, two seriously.

The accident occurred on Virginia Route 644 at 5:16 p.m., state police said.

Police said the driver of the pickup, a 16-year-old Carrollton girl, lost control. She and another teenage girl were taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News with minor injuries.

An 18-year-old man who was driving the Honda and a 16-year-old girl riding with him were airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Charges are pending, police said. The identities of the teenagers were not released.
