In response to the wire-service article, ``Americans giving less money to charities than during '80s'' (Oct. 19), I am pleased to report that the spirit of giving is alive and well in Hampton Roads.
The American Lung Association of Virginia recently held its Colonial Virginia Bike Trek in Williamsburg (Oct. 7-9). Through the efforts of many volunteers and trekkers, and the generous support from the Hampton Roads community, we were able to raise more than $130,000. This money will be used to support the fight against lung disease, our nation's No. 3 killer and the No. 1 killer of children less than the age of 1.
On behalf of the American Lung Association of Virginia, I commend all the volunteers, sponsors and the Hampton Roads community. Because of you, we can all breathe a little easier.
