BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT WINS AWARD FOR ITS SAFETY PROGRAMS

The Police Department recently earned national recognition for its efforts to promote the use of seat belts, air bags and child-safety seats.

The department was awarded first place among cities of Virginia Beach's size in the Chief's Challenge Awards Program, sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police last month.

The program was developed by the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

According to statistics, safety belts have prevented more than 30,000 deaths and 770,000 injuries in the past 10 years.
