MAN SHOT IN THIGH WHILE STRUGGLING WITH POLICE

An Elizabeth City man was shot in the thigh this weekend while struggling over a gun with a North Carolina state trooper near Brooks Avenue and Speed Street, Highway Patrol officials said.

Melvin Williams, 49, of West Main Street was listed in stable condition at Albemarle Hospital on Monday. He was charged with assault on a law officer, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, driving while impaired and driving without a seat belt, said Highway Patrol spokeswoman Renee Hoffman. Other charges were pending, officials said.

Trooper A.L. Bowen was patrolling Roanoke Avenue around 10:40 p.m. Friday and signaled a car whose passengers were not wearing seat belts, Hoffman said Monday. The car continued after being signaled and stopped abruptly at the corner of Brooks and Speed, she said.

The driver fled from the car and Bowen chased him on foot, Hoffman said. After catching up with the man, Bowen tried several means to detain him, including pepper spray.

The man tried to get control of Bowen's gun and was shot in the thigh during the struggle, Hoffman said. Bowen's hand was injured.

The car's passenger, 35-year-old Daisy R. Walton of the same address as Williams, was not charged, Hoffman said.
