SOME MAJOR U.S. CRASHES

Some major U.S. plane crashes in the past 10 years:

Sept. 8, 1994, USAir jetliner crashes on approach to Pittsburgh International Airport, killing all 132 on board. The cause is still under investigation.

July 2, 1994, USAir jetliner crashes near the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in North Carolina in a thunderstorm, killing 37 of the 57 people on board.

March 22, 1992, USAir jetliner crashes on takeoff in a snowstorm at La Guardia Airport in New York, killing 27.

March 3, 1991, United Airlines jetliner loses control and crashes near Colorado Springs airport, killing 25.

Feb. 1, 1991, USAir jetliner and a commuter plane collide on Los Angeles Airport runway; 34 killed.

Jan. 25, 1990, Avianca Boeing 707 crashes in Cove Neck, N.Y., on Long Island after running out of fuel. Of the 159 people aboard, 73 died.

July 19, 1989, United Air Lines DC-10 crashes while attempting an emergency landing at Sioux City, Iowa, killing 112 of the 296 people aboard.

Aug. 31, 1988, Delta Airlines Boeing 727 crashes on takeoff at Dallas Fort-Worth Airport. Fourteen died; 95 survived.

Dec. 7, 1987, Pacific Southwest BAe 146 jet crashes near Paso Robles, 175 miles northwest of Los Angeles; 43 killed. Gunfire was heard on the ``black box'' cockpit recorder and authorities believe a vengeful ex-employee of PSA's parent company caused the crash.

Aug. 16, 1987, Northwest Airlines MD-80, crashes on takeoff at Detroit Metropolitan Airport; 156 killed. A 4-year-old girl was the sole survivor.

Aug. 31, 1986, Aeromexico DC-9, collides with small plane over Los Angeles suburb of Cerritos; 82 killed.

June 18, 1986, De Havilland Twin Otter plane and Bell 206 helicopter, both carrying sightseers, collide over Grand Canyon; 25 killed.

Sept. 6, 1985, Midwest Express Airlines DC-9 crashes after takeoff from Milwaukee's Mitchell Field; 31 killed.

Aug. 2, 1985, Delta Air Lines Lockheed L-1011 crashes at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport; 137 killed.

Jan. 21, 1985, chartered Galaxy prop-jet on gambling junket crashes after takeoff in Reno, Nev.; 68 killed.

June 2, 1983, Air Canada DC-9 catches fire in flight and lands at Greater Cincinnati International Airport; 23 killed.
