Bertie County schools have received a $1 million corporate grant from Perdue Farms, a Maryland-based company whose largest chicken-processing facility is in the county.
The grant will be announced at a news conference at West Bertie Elementary School Thursday.
School officials are withholding details of the award until the announcement.
Dignitaries expected at the ceremony include Perdue Farms chairman Jim Perdue, 1st District U.S. Rep. Eva Clayton and state Sen. Frank Ballance, D-Warrenton, as well as local officials.
Wanda Winslow, community-schools coordinator for Bertie schools, said the district had known of the award for some time but had been working out details.
The nine-school district of 4,000 students is among the state's poorest.
``For any school system that's a tremendous grant,'' Winslow said Tuesday. ``But for Bertie County it's going to make a world of difference.'' by CNB
