PORTSMOUTH TEACHER STRUCK IN FACE WITH TEXTBOOK

A teacher was admitted to Portsmouth General Hospital on Tuesday after one or more Churchland High School students allegedly hit him in the face with a textbook.

A school district spokeswoman said Tuesday that she hadn't heard about the situation. Churchland's principal, Raymond Hale, could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.

The teacher, 47-year-old Lloyd Crawford, reportedly works in the district as a substitute. He was struck in the face with a book after one or more students in a shop class turned off the lights and began throwing objects around the room, police said.

These actions took place during the second-period class, which began shortly after 8:40 a.m. and ended about an hour later.

The teacher, reached at the hospital, declined to discuss what happened.

But he said Hale had ``taken care'' of things.

A hospital spokeswoman said Crawford was in stable condition Tuesday night. Police said Crawford suffered a bloody nose and possibly a cut near an eye.

An 18-year-old student in the class also was struck by a 16-year-old classmate, police said.

The administration urges teachers to press charges against any student who assaults them.

Superintendent Richard Trumble was unavailable for comment.

In late September, several Churchland High students were suspended after fights with racial overtones broke out in the school.

Juvenile detectives are based at Churchland High and other city high schools.
