Nine families were left homeless by a fire that damaged 10 units of an apartment building Tuesday evening.
Firefighters were called to the Americana Apartments, at 102 Impala Drive, about 7 p.m. and brought the fire under control in about 40 minutes, Deputy Fire Marshal Linwood Lovett said.
The fire, which started in a second-floor apartment, appeared to have been caused by a faulty heater, Lovett said.
``The tenant in the apartment said work had been done on the heater yesterday, and she had been smelling a burning odor even today,'' Lovett said.
Five apartments sustained fire damage and five others had water and smoke damage, Lovett said. Residents of the damaged units were given lodging at local motels by Great Atlantic Properties, the firm that manages the apartment complex, Lovett said. by CNB
