MILITARY PEOPLE

Navy Capt. Daniel J. Franken recently assumed command of the Norfolk Naval Air Station.

Franken, who enlisted in the Navy in 1964, G1NEEP3 Franken served aboard the aircraft carriers Independence and Kitty Hawk for three years, quickly reaching the rank of petty officer first class, and was selected for the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program in 1969.

In 1972, after earning a bachelor of science degree in mathematics at the University of Colorado in Boulder, he was commissioned as an ensign. In 1973, Franken was designated as a naval flight officer.

During his career, Franken has flown nearly 4,000 hours and completed more than 850 carrier landings in tactical jet aircraft. He has commanded Attack Squadrons 36 and 42. He attended the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., in 1990-91, where he received a master of arts degree in national security and strategic studies. He also received a master of arts degree in international relations from Salve Regina College, Newport, R.I., in 1991.

Franken's most recent assignment was at the Pentagon with the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition.

Marine Pvt. Jonell D. Braham, son of Guy J. Braham of the 2300 block of Grandy Ave., recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He is a 1993 graduate of Maury High School.

Navy Seaman Recruit David A. Hanson, son of Mary A. Archer of the 5500 block of Springhill Road, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

OFFICERS

The Friends of the Norfolk Juvenile Court has announced the following officers for 1994-95: Marguerite Ellis, president; Brenda Norman, vice president; Fred Watson, secretary; and R. Paul Speece, treasurer.

CAMPUS NOTES

Twelve $1,000 mini-grants were awarded to the following schools by the Department of Human Relations, Staff Development and Student Affairs through the SMART Grant: Lindenwood, Norview, Oakwood, Ocean View, Poplar Halls, Tanners Creek and Willard elementary schools, and Norview Middle, Ruffner Middle and Norview High.

Virginia Mayer, Linda Mayfield and L. Ann Bixler, teachers from Norview High School, were published in the spring edition of Virginia English Bulletin, a publication by the Virginia Association of Teachers of English. by CNB
