At Roberts Park Elementary, the political campaign was in full swing last week.
Marvette Munden, a third-grade teacher in charge of election events, mapped out the election plans:
Monday was Student Education Day, with teachers leading discussions concerning the candidates.
Tuesday, Parent Education Day, featured a PTA meeting with guest speaker Dr. Evelyn Sears Peevy, secretary of the Norfolk Electoral Board and its first and only black member.
Wednesday, students in pre-kindergarten through second grade cast their votes.
Third- through fifth-graders voted on Thursday.
On Friday, the results were announced.
Johanna Orupabo, 10, a fifth-grader, looked a little unsure as she approached the ballot box.
Was it the first time she had voted?
``Uh, huh,'' she said. ``It's fun. I just hope Marshall Coleman gets elected.''
Antwan Harris, also 10 and in the fifth grade, took a slightly different view toward the outcome:
``I voted for Robb 'cause what he said was good.''
Classmate Christian Smith agreed with Antwan:
``I think Robb's going to win because of his judgment.''
Every election has to have precinct workers, and at Roberts Park, that person was Anita Mingo, who took her job very seriously.
``I have to make sure everything's going right and help people put their votes in the ballot box,'' she said. ``I deal mostly with parents. If some people don't know how to do it, I help them.'' ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
