ROWENA'S GIVES NEW MEANING TO "HOT CAKE"

THE HEAT IS on. On the dinner table, that is.

Rowena's, the Norfolk-based maker of poundcakes, jams and other sweets is raising temperatures with a jalapeno poundcake.

The company's new Some Like it Hot Cake isn't meant for the dessert table. It's intended as a side to the main course. The cake goes great with chili, soups or other foods that can handle a spicy accompaniment.

Cornmeal gives this cake a heartier texture than the usual poundcake; its flavor is reminiscent of cornmeal muffins. But it isn't dry or mealy. Bits of jalapeno peppers, paprika, cilantro and chives add zing.

Some Like it Hot Cake comes in three sizes: a 2 3/4-pound round for $19.75; a 1 1/2-pound loaf for $15.50; and a 10-ounce tea cake for $8.

Rowena's offers five other new poundcakes: coconut, rocky road, crunchy peanut, buttered rum and mint chocolate chip. Not all cakes are availble in all sizes, and some orders require 48 hours notice.
