MARITA GOLDEN, an award-winning writer on African-American culture, began a three-day residency at Norfolk State University on Wednesday.
She will take part in one-on-one encounters with students and will visit classes. At 12:30 this afternoon, Golden will give a free public reading at G.W.C. Brown Theater on campus.
Her first book, ``A Woman's Place,'' was published in 1986 by Ballentine Books. She since has published a memoir and two other novels, ``Long Distance Life'' and ``And Do Remember.'' She also has edited three works on African-American culture and is at work on a fourth novel.
Publisher's Weekly said that her writing ``reflects the conflicts of a pivotal generation
Golden is a senior writer (a teaching/writing position) in the master of fine arts writing program at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.
