A 15-year-old I.C. Norcom High School student was charged with assault Wednesday after hitting a teacher in the face.
The teacher, 44-year-old Richard Humble, was cut near his right eye.
The encounter occurred about noon, when the student allegedly became angry with Humble in class. Police said the student lashed out at the teacher after confronting him. The case has been referred to school authorities for disciplinary action. The charge is a misdemeanor. The student was not identified because he is a juvenile.
Wednesday's attack was the second in two days in which a Portsmouth high school teacher allegedly was injured by a student.
