WHEN WELSH, GOLDSMITH FIRST MET, DUKE COACH WAS IN DRIVER'S SEAT

Duke coach Fred Goldsmith likes to tell of chauffeuring Penn State coach Joe Paterno around during the Nittany Lions' visits to the Orange Bowl.

Goldsmith was a high school coach in the Miami area and volunteered in hopes of picking up a few coaching tips.

Goldsmith hasn't mentioned that sitting in the back seat with Paterno on some of those drives was Virginia coach George Welsh, then a Penn State assistant.

Maybe Welsh didn't make an impression on Goldsmith. But Welsh says he recalls Goldsmith from those visits in the late 1960s.

``I do remember him,'' Welsh said. ``He made an impression.''

How so?

``Well,'' Welsh deadpanned, ``he knew the directions for getting to Joe's Stone Crab House.''

The two got to know each other better when Welsh was head coach at Navy and Goldsmith was an assistant at the Air Force Academy.

A new chapter in the relationship begins Saturday, when the Cavaliers play at Duke.

BUT WAS IT TRUE? Goldsmith is one of those coaches who posts quotes clipped from newspapers on the bulletin board in hopes of inspiring his team.

But Virginia linebacker Randy Neal thinks Goldsmith is making too much of Neal's comment that Duke built a 7-0 record off a soft schedule.

``He (Goldsmith) is from Duke, so he ought to be smarter than that,'' Neal said. ``I didn't say anything too outrageous, like guaranteeing a victory.''

IN DEMAND: Whenever a coaching vacancy is even rumored, it seems North Carolina coach Mack Brown's name is linked to it.

We hear this week that Brown is the leading candidate to take over at LSU at the end of the season.

A couple weeks ago, word was that Oklahoma wants Brown as its next coach.

Next week, it could be Georgia or Texas.

Brown, a former Tulane coach, says for the record that no one from LSU has called him, and that he is very happy at North Carolina.

IT'S RECRUITING: While Brown's coaching skills have been questioned, what makes him so attractive to other schools is his recruiting abilities.

That was one of the main differences Clemson coach Tommy West noted in the North Carolina program when he returned to the ACC last December.

Clemson - as well as Virginia and South Carolina - loaded up on North Carolina talent when Dick Crum coached the Tar Heels.

``Now he (Brown) has sealed off the state,'' West said.

Brown acknowledges that Clemson and South Carolina had more North Carolinians on their teams than did the Tar Heels when he became head coach.

``We had to turn that around,'' Brown said, ``and we did.''

Seventeen of North Carolina's 22 starters against North Carolina State last week were native Tar Heels.

NEW GOAL: Now that Florida State has captured the record for most consecutive ACC victories, 22, what is next for the Seminoles?

Another 22-game string, perhaps.

That would tie the NCAA Division I-A record for most consecutive conference victories, 44, set by Oklahoma against Big Eight foes in the 1950s.

STAT SHEET: Florida State's Danny Kanell is 97 yards short of 2,000 passing yards this season. . . . N.C. State's Damien Covington had 22 tackles against North Carolina. . . . Virginia freshman Ronde Barber continues to lead the nation in interceptions, with seven in seven games. . . . Georgia Tech's Jason Bender is third nationally in punting (45.7 average) and has had a dozen kicks for more than 50 yards. . . . Maryland wide receiver Geroy Simon ranks sixth nationally with 53 catches for 652 yards and is 20 catches shy of ACC record.

FINAL WORD: After last Saturday's 59-20 victory, Florida State's Corey Fuller had some unsolicited advice for Duke.

``Stick to hoops,'' he said. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
