ALLISON ANKERSON NAMED CONFERENCE PLAYER OF YEAR

Defensive specialists in soccer aren't usually considered for a prestigious award such as conference player of the year, but Catawba College's Allison Ankerson proved to be an exception.

The former Maury High standout was named the South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Year for Division II Catawba as a sweeper.

dedication. Before the season being conference player of the year was one of my goals. I'm just sad that it (her career) is all over.''

The senior was also named first-team all-conference and all-tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

Ankerson has acquired a plethora of other awards at Catawba. In 1992 she was All-South Region and honorable mention NAIA All-American. In 1993 she was All-South Region and NSCAA first-team All-American.

Her career statistics at Catawba for 69 games: 69 starts, 56 shots, 10 goals, 11 assists for 31 points. Three of her 10 goals came this season.

One of the tallest girls on the team, Ankerson was used during corner kicks for headers off the kick. Ankerson was also called upon to play forward on occasion.

ODAC FOOTBALL REPORT: Randolph-Macon, which has struggled most of the season, posted the biggest conference upset of the year by besting previously undefeated Guilford, 28-14. Guilford can still clinch a tie for the conference title with Emory and Henry with a victory over Washington and Lee Saturday. Week. He threw for 136 yards and a touchdown and ran for 85 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. ... Bridgewater's Michael Hurt recorded the team's first 100-yard rushing game, gaining 102 yards on 23 carries. ... Emory and Henry running back Charlie Cole, who missed the past three games with a dislocated elbow returned to rush for 121 yards and two touchdowns in the Wasps' 35-31 victory over Clinch Valley. ... Washington and Lee freshman running back Seth McKinley ran for over 100 yards for the third straight game rushing for 135 yards on 26 carries in the Generals' 28-3 win over Bridgewater.

His biggest victory of the season was winning the district championship at St. Mary's. ``John has worked hard this summer traveling and competing,'' said assistant coach Mitch Brindley. ``He is very dedicated.'' ... Monarch golfer Josh Cup scored a double eagle on the tenth hole at the Seascape Golf Course Tuesday. He placed 11th in the Seascape tournament with a 144. ... Golfer Chris Krueger was ODU's top golfer in three of four tournaments. His stroke average was 73.5. ... Lady Monarch field hockey star Sue Callahan (Princess Anne) was named to the first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association. Callahan leads the nation in assists (16) and has netted eight goals.

NORFOLK STATE UPDATE: The men's cross country team will head to the NCAA regionals in Kutztown, PA this weekend. Leading the Spartans will be sophomore Robert Gerrard, junior Calvin Graham and sophomore Richard Mike (Indian River). ... The women will sending junior Karen Sinclair. Sinclair finished third in the conference tournament. ... The Spartanette volleyball team finished 23-11 overall, 18-6 in the CIAA. Head coach Wilhelmenia Wright-Harrison's career record at Norfolk State is 58-29 (.667). The Spartanettes finished the regular season ranked second in the CIAA North Division.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN REPORT: The Marlin soccer team will lose only one player from this year's squad - ODAC Player of the Year Mike Duffy. Duffy and Jim Hickling (Kempsville) lead the team in goals with 20 apiece. ... With its 14 wins the Lady Marlins soccer team tied a school record set back in 1989. Marcie Blackbourn led the team with 16 goals, 11 assists for 43 points. Sonya Huss (Princess Anne) finished with an .87 goals against average. She is 21-5-1 in goal.
