TONIGHT'S GAMES

It's the preseason favorite against the surprise team of the Beach District tonight when Green Run hosts Tallwood.

The Stallions, who have won 12 straight dating back to last season, are 8-0 and ranked No. 2 in South Hampton Roads and No. 7 in the state.

Tallwood, which was 2-18 in its first two seasons of existence, is 7-1 and ranked No. 5 locally. The Lions are just one victory away from locking up an Eastern Region Division 6 playoff berth.

So the teams come in with different approaches to one of the biggest games of the season.

If Tallwood upsets Green Run, there is a possibility of a three-way tie between Green Run, Tallwood and Kempsville. If there were a three-way tie for the district title, then Tallwood would be declared the Eastern Region's No. 1 seed due to a higher power rating.

``We don't want to be a part of the district championship,'' said Green Run coach Cadillac Harris. ``We want it all to ourselves.''

Tallwood coach Ken Barto says his Lions, who two weeks ago lost to Kempsville 17-0, are more prepared to play in a big game after a 14-7 victory over perennial Beach District power Bayside last week.

``Green Run's more worried about us than we are about them,'' Barton said. ``We have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Our kids really matured the last two weeks. We learned a lot about the big-game situations.''

Elsewhere, Deep Creek can clinch the Southeastern District championship with a victory over Great Bridge.

Across the water, two of the state's top-ranked teams meet to decide the Peninsula District title. No. 2 Phoebus (9-0) and No. 3 Hampton (8-0) square off at Darling Stadium. [For complete schedule, please see microfilm] by CNB
