READERS SPEAK OUT ON U.S. SENATE RACE: NORTH VS. ROBB

We need Oliver North in the U.S. Senate to (1) oppose Clinton's radical socialist agenda; (2) force Congress to concentrate on government operations and eschew social programs; (3) eliminate the deficit by running budget surpluses; (4) join Jesse Helms in returning this nation to sanity; (5) get tougher on crime; (6) restore the competency and force effectiveness of our armed forces; (7) obstruct those who try to push their degenerate agenda, e.g., special rights for homosexuals and grants to the National Endowment for the Arts; and (8) make a major paradigm shift to get back to the basics that this nation was founded on.

ROBB'S THE ONLY CHOICE

The only real questions concerning a candidate for the Senate should be: ``Is he honest? Is he capable? Is he faithful to the Constitution?''

This is the creed of the political faith of Thomas Jefferson and the touchstone by which we should try the services of those who seek to represent us and those in whom we are called to repose our trust and confidence.

When it comes down to common sense, Charles Robb is the only real choice. He was a fine governor, and he knows the needs of Virginia, especially regarding education. He has had six years in the U.S. Senate and has well-represented all of the people of this state. He should be re-elected.

Sen. Robb supports what most Virginians support, including a strong military, leadership for the United States as a world superpower in foreign policy, fiscal responsibility, gun control and women's right to choose.

Supporters of Marshall Coleman also should vote for Robb. Returning him to the Senate, where he has served as a member of the Foreign Relations Committee and as a member of the Armed Services Committee, would advance responsible representation by a responsible senator for a responsible and enlightened electorate.

REASONS WE NEED NORTH

It's so simple. A vote for Sen. Charles Robb is for more special programs, i.e., midnight basketball, at taxpayers' expense; more federal government intruding into our lives; and more Bill Clinton socialist policies - and Hillary's too.

A vote for Marshall Coleman is a vote for Robb.

A vote for Oliver North is a vote for less federal government in our lives, lower taxes, a military that is strong and term limits for Congress.

My unwavering choice for the U.S. Senate is Oliver North.

ROBB EFFECTIVE FOR AMERICA

Perhaps Oliver North's yet undisclosed plan for reducing the deficit is to mail millions of letters to Americans requesting contributions.

Maybe he plans to fight crime by conducting an arms-for-victims strategy with street gangs.

Chuck Robb's experience, definitive and executable plans and anti-extremist views have proved effective for America. Chuck Robb has my vote.

NORTH FOR THE FUTURE

Like most career military, I have hangups with Oliver North and the Iran-Contra scenario. Chuck Robb fares no better regarding allegations of drug use by his weekend friends, illegal taping of a phone conversation and infidelity. Marshall Coleman can't win.

My choice must come by looking into the future.

On the issues of increasing taxes to support liberal giveaway programs, Mrs. Clinton's health-care program, more government regulations where they don't belong, increased gay rights in the military, etc., I would rather have North vote No than Robb vote Yes.

North supports those issues which represent my vision and hopes for the future of this country. Robb does not. I won't sell out the future just because I don't like North's past.

ROBB WORKS WELL WITH OTHERS

The Hampton Roads area is dependent on a strong military presence. Our economy, in many aspects, relies on the many businesses that, directly and indirectly, support the armed forces. With the base-closing commission again looking to downsize, we must have a cohesive congressional delegation working to keep our local bases and installations intact.

Sen. Charles Robb has proved that he can look beyond political-party lines and work with Sen. John Warner and other congressmen from Virginia to influence the various armed-forces commissions to bring and keep the military and related industry in Hampton Roads.

Because of his ability to work with all of Virginia's congressional representatives, I will vote for Chuck Robb on Nov. 8.

FRESH START WITH OLLIE

I believe a person should vote based on what a candidate's perceived potential is, not what he was or was not 10-15 years ago. Heading into the next century, I think we should have a fresh start, a new look at what's going on in our country. That's why I am voting for Oliver North.

If, six years from now, I find that I am disillusioned, all that has to be done is to vote him out. I am prepared to give Ollie North an opportunity to help get us out of this welfare, crime-ridden, Clintonomics (taxes) quagmire we are drowning in, because Chuck Robb won't.

ROBB RESPECTS LAW

I am not going to vote for Oliver North because he has put himself above the law and because I disagree with many of his key positions - not the least of which is putting a cap on the minimum wage.

It seems ludicrous to me that Virginia, the birthplace of representative government, might elect for its representative a man who held that government in contempt and then bragged about it.

I am not going to vote for Marshall Coleman because I disagree with many of his key positions, among them a voucher system which would include private schools.

I am going to vote for Chuck Robb on Nov. 8 primarily because of his respect for the rule of law and because I agree with most of his approaches to social problems.

POSITIVES OUTWEIGH NEGATIVES

Oliver North's positives far outweigh his negatives, and we know how he will vote.

But the most important issue in this election is who will control Congress. Forty years of liberal Democratic control is enough.

With enough votes for Ollie North, Jim Chapman and George Sweet, we can help put an end to the one-party rule in Congress.

ROBB RESPECTS THE CONSTITUTION

I am a little confused. Don't Republican conservatives interpret the U.S. Constitution as it is written?

Aren't conservatives advocates of law and order?

Did not Oliver North commit acts against the same Constitution he was under oath to uphold?

Did not Oliver North benefit from the same Constitution he was usurping?

Have not conservatives been arguing against touching the Second (``right-to-bear-arms'') Amendment?

How could the Republican Party choose a candidate who broke federal laws?

Will the practice of setting aside the Constitution for one's own purpose be an example of what the Republican Party will do when and if it controls Congress?

If Oliver North is the kind of individual who will do what he wants to do regardless of the laws, does not it make sense to believe that he will be a dangerous man in the U.S. Senate?

Doesn't it make sense to vote for Charles Robb, who respects the Constitution?

HALT THE DEMOCRATS' MARCH

One of your correspondents commented that President Clinton was elected by a majority (letter, Nov. 1).

I ask all of your readers to remember that President Clinton was elected because 19 percent of us cast our votes with high hopes for H. Ross Perot, running as an independent. If Mr. Perot had not been in the race, President Bush would still be in the Oval Office.

President Clinton should never forget that the majority of the voters did not want him or his political agenda. He did not win by a majority but by the participation of a spoiler.

As I see it, the purpose of my vote on Nov. 8 must be to do everything I can to halt the Democrats' march toward higher taxes, more spending and less local and personal control of my money and my life. I will cast my vote for the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, Oliver L. North.

A VOTE FOR NORTH?

Do Virginians want someone in the Senate who is:

1. Self-centered.

2. Self-serving.

3. Arrogant.

4. Power hungry.

5. Out of control.

If elected, I believe power hunger could make this a very dangerous person.

If the above is what you are looking for to represent Virginia in the U.S. Senate, vote Oliver North, a Pat Robertson favorite.

WHAT TO BELIEVE?

An Oct. 26 news story quoted Chuck Robb as saying that abortion should be legal in all circumstances as long as the procedure is completed within the first trimester of pregnancy. That position is much more conservative than the answer my wife received when she wrote to his office a few months ago.

At that time, Sen. Robb was co-sponsoring the Freedom of Choice Act, a bill that would have legalized abortion into the ninth month of pregnancy.

Since I know that the stated position is far more conservative than Mr. Robb's record in the Senate, I can't help but think that Mr. Robb is misrepresenting himself on other issues as well.

NORTH'S `A GOOD MAN'

Oliver North is a good man and was falsely accused. Congress itself ``trashed'' the Constitution with an attainder hearing. Our American ancestors despised political trials so much that they placed two prohibitions against bills of attainder in the U.S. Constitution. Long before they added the Bill of Rights, they barred Congress from using public hearings as a pretext for a political vendetta against any citizen. Putting an end to attainders as an engine of political persecution was one of their foremost political concerns.

Everyone is saying Oliver North does not speak the truth. What about our President Bill Clinton? Look at the Clinton track record. It speaks for itself - loud and clear.

Oliver North fought for our country. He was not a draft dodger. He defended the U.S. Constitution. Oliver North is also a faithful husband and father. And he is no murderer of innocent unborn chldren.

NORTH'S LEGION

There is only one thing that could scare me more than Oliver North with his conviction that he is above answering to law or authority, and that's Oliver North with a position of power and a legion of followers who unquestioningly accept that he can do no wrong!

KEEP RACISM OUT OF ELECTION

The attempt by Chuck Robb to link North and his supporters to David Duke is a futile and repugnant move to scare life into a once rock-solid Democratic constituency.

Devoid of any new ideas and on the wrong side of the issues with Bill Clinton, Robb has taken the lowest road possible by trying to make this a campaign about race. (Is Chuck Robb ``racist'' because he has invited in Jesse Jackson who has embraced Louis Farrakhan?)

In a time when race relations are strained, it is morally reprehensible to try to label or insinuate that a candidate is ``racist'' when he is not.

Robb may call North a liar if he desires, but he shouldn't try to divide the people of Virginia just to keep a Senate seat.
