Donnie Edward Akridge, 46, a retired U.S. Army major, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 1994.
A native of Enterprise, Ala., he had been a Hampton resident since 1989 and worked in the Department of Educational Technology at Old Dominion University. He had retired from the Army in 1991 after 20 years in the military police.
Major Akridge received his bachelor's degree in education from the University of Southern Alabama, his master's degree from Old Dominion University and was completing his doctorate in urban sciences. He was an active member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church and was assistant troop master of Troop 31 of the Boy Scouts of America and had received the Wood Badge Award.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Mary Akridge and two sons, Jason Edward Akridge and Nathan John Akridge, all of Hampton; his mother, Alma T. Akridge of Enterprise; a sister, Cathy Lynn Moates of Enterprise, Ala.; and two brothers, James Randall Akridge of Brewton, Ala. and Ronald Lee Akridge of Jackson, Tenn.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, in St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church by the Rev. Joseph L. Clark. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 3 to 4 p.m. at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. Memorials may be sent to the building fund at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 7 Frank Lane, Hampton, Va. 23651.
