EDITORIAL PAGE EDITOR JOHN BARNES RESIGNS

John A. Barnes, editorial page editor of The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star, resigned Friday.

``The Virginian-Pilot and I, by mutual agreement, have come to a parting of the ways,'' Barnes said. ``I came to Hampton Roads with perhaps a different vision of what the editorial page should be than what Landmark Communications had in mind. I have enjoyed my time here, and I appreciate the opportunity I was given.

``Now is the time to finish the book I am writing for Gale Research in Detroit and pursue other options.''

Frank Batten Jr., publisher of the newspapers, said: ``I was pleased with John's writing skills, with his diligence and with his depth of knowledge of current affairs.

``I generally agreed with the conservative tenor of his editorials. But John and I had some differences over management style that we were unable to bridge.''

The search for a successor will begin immediately, Batten said. Barnes' last day will be Friday.

Barnes, 33, came to the newspapers in May from The Detroit News, where he had been deputy editorial page editor. He also has been an editorial writer for the Boston Herald, an assistant to columnists Rowland Evans and Robert Novak, and a reporter for The Washington Times.

He is writing a book, ``Historical Landmarks of Irish-Americans.'' by CNB
