DEEP CREEK EDGES PAST GREAT BRIDGE

Deep Creek looked like it wanted to be anywhere but a football field Friday. The Hornets turned in a lackluster performance in clinching the Southeastern District title with a 13-0 win at Great Bridge.

``Any time you can win without playing with emotion, it's a good sign,'' said Deep Creek defensive coordinator John Dukes.

After turning in a nearly flawless performance last week against defending district champion Norcom, the Hornets looked like an entirely different team against Great Bridge, gaining only 148 yards.

Deep Creek (9-0, 6-0) went nowhere in its first possession and lost multipurpose back Cedric Williams to a leg injury.

The Hornets began their lone scoring drive of the half at the end of the first quarter. Starting at its own 23, Deep Creek used Deon Dyer and Dee Harrell, Williams' replacement, on short runs off tackle to reach the Great Bridge 39.

On third and long, quarterback Arnie Powell found Kendall Watson open over the middle to sustain the drive. Dyer carried the ball to the 23, and Powell scored on the opening play of the second quarter, scrambling away from Wildcats defenders for the touchdown.

Great Bridge (3-7, 2-5) had an excellent chance to score on its next possession, but a bizarre 22-play drive that reached the Hornets' 7 failed to produce points.

Corey Holley and Adrian Hughes traded off carrying the ball from their own 30 to the Deep Creek 10.

Michael Cuddyer's pass into double coverage on third and long was batted away, but the Hornets were called for pass interference, giving Great Bridge first and goal at the 7. The Wildcats hurt themselves with penalties and Cuddyer was dropped for a sack that pushed Great Bridge back to the 27. Steve Weir then missed a 44-yard field goal.

Deep Creek scored on its opening possession of the second half on a 3-yard run by Dyer.

``In the second half we got conservative and just tried to maintain the lead,'' said coach Jerry Carter.
