EASTERN SHORE CLUB WINS SURF FISHING TOURNEY

The Eastern Shore of Virginia Anglers' Club of Bloxom won the 37th Annual Cape Hatteras Surf Fishing Tournament Friday with a two-day catch of 38 fish and 107 points.

However, competition could not have been much closer. The Sanduners International Fishing Team of Kill Devil Hills finished second, also with 107 points, but only 36 catches, the tiebreaker.

Third place went to the Merchantville Fishing Club of Berlin, N.J., with 27 catches and 74 points, while the Mer-Mullets of Hatteras were the top female club with 10 catches and 37 points, good for 23rd place overall in the 100 team field.

The Sanduners were represented by John A. Watkins, Phil Kinis, George McLean, Gene McLean, Curtis Miller and Wally Smith.

A special award went to Lynette Sawyer of the Fish Squeezers of Elizabeth City with a 23-inch red drum. Ginny Beckwith of the F-Team of Kitty Hawk had the largest bluefish caught by a woman at 14 inches.
