THE ADMIRALS HAVE FOUND A BIG MAN TO FILL HALVERSON'S SKATES

The Hampton Roads Admirals moved quickly to fill the slot left open by the loss of Trevor Halverson, signing forward Ron Majic, who was cut earlier this season by both the Quebec Nordiques and Cornwall of the AHL.

Majic, who played in Louisville and Huntington last season, is one of the largest players in the ECHL at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds.

He flew into Norfolk Friday afternoon and played briefly a few hours later against the Charlotte Checkers.

Majic said he was contacted by several ECHL teams after leaving Cornwall, but waited until the Admirals called.

``This was my first choice,'' he said of Hampton Roads. ``I wanted to play for (Admirals coach) John Brophy and with the guys here.''

Majic is a Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, native and is a friend of Halverson and Admirals forward John Porco, with whom he played junior hockey in Ontario.

``That's one of the reasons I'm here,'' he said. ``I played hockey with them all summer. I knew if I came here I'd be with a great bunch of guys.''

But he came here knowing little about his future.

Halverson, called up by the AHL's Portland Pirates Thursday, could be sent back to Norfolk any day. Dennis McEwen (on injured reserve) and Colin Gregor (who becomes eligible Nov. 9) will soon be added to the roster, meaning at least two players will have to go.

Majic says Brophy made no promises about how long he'd play for the Admirals.

``He said that's up to me,'' Majik said. ``If I don't do the job, I won't be here long.

``I'm just happy to be here, to have the chance to play hockey here. It's up to me to make the most of it.''

ON TV: Halverson and the Portland Pirates play Providence tonight in a game being televised by Home Team Sports. The Admirals make their debut on HTS next Saturday at Greensboro.

CAPTAIN ROD: With McEwen out and Halverson in Portland, Rod Taylor is the third Admiral to be designated captain this season.

Taylor, in his fourth season with Hampton Roads, is the only veteran on the roster.

GOUDIE OUT: Standout defenseman Brian Goudie will not make the trip to Charlotte and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game in Richmond. He has a strained back muscle suffered in Wednesday's victory over Johnstown. ILLUSTRATION: ASSOCIATED PRESS photo
