While everyone was busy talking about Manteo High School's volleyball team, another area team quietly sneaked into the state playoffs and made a run for the 1A championship.
After winning three rounds of the playoffs, Camden County finally bowed out in the final four to a tough Swansboro team in four games.
Swansboro is the defending 1A state champ.
The Lady Bruins peaked at the right time. Their 16-8 record may not be indicative of a state power, but head coach Tim Brown said that most of those losses came to bigger schools.
``When we were 16-7 we only lost to one other 1A school. All the others were 2A or 4A,'' he said. ``Four of the losses went to all five games. We were holding our own against everyone.''
The 1A loss during the regular season was to Gates County. The Lady Bruins came back and beat them twice, including a three-game sweep in the quarterfinals of the playoffs.
The Camden program, in only its fifth year, has grown in leaps and bounds. The first two years, the team failed to reach the playoffs. In 1992 the Lady Bruins were 15-5 and reached the third round of the playoffs and in 1993 the team tied for the conference title and went two rounds into the playoffs.
``Much of the credit goes to our middle school program,'' Brown said. ``Coaches Anne Forehand, Quinn Wrigglesworth and Al Dunn, they love the game of volleyball. They are teaching them how to do things the right way.'' by CNB
