NOTHING `SACRED' ABOUT GUNS

George Sweet pledges in a campaign flyer to defend his constituents' ``sacred'' right to own guns. This is particularly ironic since Sweet heads the Atlantic Shores Christian School where, in 1988,teacher Karen Farley was shot and killed and another teacher was seriously wounded by a gun-toting student.

The tragic, costly toll of gun violence in our culture will continue to escalate until our citizens and responsible leaders recognize that well-constructed and effective legislation could keep guns out of the hands of children and criminals without denying them to law-abiding citizens.

Mr. Sweet also wants to deny women the right to choose a legal and safe abortion. It is ludicrous that a so-called ``pro-life'' candidate chooses to ignore the proliferation of lethal weapons which are spreading mayhem and destruction throughout American society.

Gun ownership is not sacred. Karen Farley's life was. And so are the lives of all the other innocent victims who have been and will be slaughtered on the unholy altar of guns.

I'm voting to re-elect Norman Sisisky in the 4th Congressional District.
