SPENCER MAYFIELD JR., basketball coach at Nansemond River High, has been inducted in the Elizabeth City State University sports hall of fame.
Mayfield started all four years at ECSU, served as co-captain during his junior campaign and as captain during his senior season. He averaged 23 points per game as a senior after averaging in double figures the three previous years.
A graduate of ECSU in industrial education in 1965, Mayfield earned a master's degree in technology education from Virginia State University in 1974.
He has been a head basketball coach at both Nansemond River and John F. Kennedy for 22 years during which time he has won 347 games and lost 120 for a winning percentage of 72.3. Mayfield's teams have won three state championships, five regional titles and nine district crowns.
Mayfield is married and has three daughters. He is a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church where he has served as a trustee for 14 years.
The induction ceremony was held at the K.E. White Center in Elizabeth City on Oct. 21.
Mayfield also has been selected as the state nominee for the 1995 National coach of the year in basketball. He will be honored as the state's coach of the year at a banquet in Hampton next July.
SWIMMING RESULTS: Katie VanSickle of Suffolk finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke and fifth in the 200-yard butterfly at the Octoberfest 94 swimming meet at Hampton University last weekend. She had a time of 1:11.32 in the backstroke and a 2:40.7 in the butterfly while swimming for the Old Dominion Aquatic Club.
Six of the Tidewater area swim clubs competed in the meet, which featured a total of 12 teams and 562 swimmers. There were 50 new national A time standards achieved by the 216 area swimmers.
BOWLING BITS: Mike and Joyce Joyner fired a 617 series to win the Scotch Doubles competition at the Franklin Bowling Center. Barry Stafford and Tina Story placed second with a 596.
In the Brian Moon Memorial Classic, Deborah Elliott had a high game of 188 while Cheryl McClanahan had a high series of 477. For the men, Mike Davis rolled a 269 game and Chuck Gardner shot a 663 series.

BENNETT`S CREEK HONORS: The Bennett's Creek Football Association cheerleaders competed in the Southeastern Virginia Pop Warner Conference meet at Churchland High last weekend and jumped away with three firsts and a second place award. The group will be going to Johnson City for the regional competition Nov. 25.
Winning top honors were the midgets (for girls 12 through 14), junior midgets (10-12) and flag 2 (5-7). The second place squad was the junior pee wees for girls aged eight and nine.
In addition, three boys football teams - midget, junior midget and junior pee wee - also will be going to Johnson City to play in bowl games Nov. 26.
